Materiel Magazine Vol.4

Matériel Magazine is an (optimistically) annual collection of creative work by internationally award-winning designers, illustrators, photographers, typographers and writers. Generically named after the definition of ‘supplies for an organization,’ Matériel began its life as a personal project, intended as a blank canvas for the Franklyn studio to collaborate with artists, illustrators, photographers and product designers in the form of a newsprint magazine.

The theme for the volume 4 (Year 2020) issue was “AHHHHHHHH.” We lived in a polarized age – not just politics or pandemic, but in the mood and contrast in everything we do, see and experience. Scary or zen – it’s all up to your interpretation.

My take was obviously the ‘scary’ part of the year 2020. It was quite a dark time, but I also wanted to make my illustration somewhat playful using kids toys and fun monsters.
